Candidato que apoya la lucha de Sarayaku ganó elecciones presidenciales (29 de noviembre 2006)

El domingo 26 de noviembre fue elegido presidente de la república el economista Rafael Correa, quién durante su campaña públicamente expresaba su apoyo a la lucha de Sarayaku. Además, aseguró que no habría exploración o explotación petrolera en territorios de los pueblos indígenas a menos que ellos den su consentimiento.

Hacemos un llamado a la sociedad internacional para que le de todo apoyo a Rafael Correa. Al mismo tiempo exigimos a Rafael Correa que cumpla con sus promesas de campaña, brindando una solución final al largo conflicto entre el pueblo de Sarayaku y la compañía petrolera CGC, y asegurando protección duradera del medio ambiente en Sarayaku y la cuenca del Río Bobonaza.

En las mesas electorales en Sarayaku, a donde acudieron votantes tanto de Sarayaku como de las comunidades vecinas, el apoyo a Rafael Correa fue masivo. Hubo 327 votos para Rafael Correa y solo 22 votos para su rival, el multimillonario bananero Alvaro Noboa. Como siempre ha sido el caso en la zona, hubo un alto grado de ausentismo, por razón de las grandes distancias que la gente tiene que trasladarse a pie o por agua para llegar a las mesas de votación.

Canditate who supports Sarayaku’s struggle won presidencial elections (November 29, 2006)

On Sunday november 26, economist Rafael Correa was elected president of Ecuador. During the campaign, he had publicly expressed his support for the struggle of Sarayaku. In addition, he assured that there World be no exploration or exploitation of oil in the territorios of indigenous people, unless they give their consent.

We make a call to the internacional community to provide all posible support to Rafael Correa. At the same time, we demand from Rafael Correa that he fulfils the promises made during the campaign, providing a final solution to the long conflict between the Sarayaku people and the oil company CGC, and assuring enduring protection of the environment in Sarayaku and the Bobonaza River watershed.

In the polling station in Sarayaku, where people from Sarayaku as well as from neighbouring communities come to vote, their was massive support for Rafael Correa. There were 327 votes for Rafael Correa and only 22 votes for his rival, the banana tycoon and multimillionaire Alvaro Noboa. As always has been the case in the area, there was a high degree of absenteeism because of the long distances people have to travel by foot or river in order to reach the polling station.
