Primera mujer presidenta en la historia de Sarayaku (4 de junio de 2005)

El día 22 de mayo del 2005 en el II Congreso del Territorio Autónomo del Pueblo Originario Kichwa de Sarayaku, dos cientos cincuenta congresistas oficiales de las comunidades eligieron su nuevo Consejo de Gobierno.

El consejo quedó constituido por Presidenta, Hilda Santi Gualinga, Vicepresidente, Rubén Gualinga, Dirigente de Desarrollo Comunitario, Héctor Malaver, Dirigente de la Mujer, Angelina Cuji, Dirigente de Salud, Camilo Gualinga, Dirigente de Educación, Wilson Malaver y otros dirigentes del sistema tradicional.

Hilda Santi fue elegida con el ochenta y cinco por ciento de la votación de los delegados convirtiéndose en la primera mujer presidenta en la historia del pueblo Sarayaku. El amplio apoyo recibido por Hilda está acompañado del mandato de su pueblo a defender su territorio de la codicia ilimitada del capital trasnacional. Siguiendo la fuerte tradición luchadora de la mujer Sarayaku, Hilda asume la dirección de la lucha de su pueblo con una amplia legitimidad interna que espera fortalecer con alianzas externas que compartan con ellos los valores de dignidad y desicion propia sobre el destino del pueblo Sarayaku.

Su gestión se organiza en torno a cuatro áreas fundamentales,

1. Continuidad y seguimiento de la lucha antipetroleo, reordenamiento y delimitación territorial.

2. Implementación de infraestructura y proyectos productivos.

3. Mejorar la calidad de la educación intercultural bilingüe a través de la capacitación con la participación de hombres y mujeres de conocimiento ancestral.

4. Fortalecer y desarrollar los conocimientos ancestrales en salud y buscar la articulación de ésta con el sistema oficial de salud.

First female president in the history of Sarayaku (June 4, 2005)

On May 22, at the II Congress of the Autonomous Territory of the Original Kichwa People of Sarayaku, two hundred and fifty official delegates from the communities elected their new Government Council.

The Council is constituted by Hilda Santi as president, Rubén Gualinga as vice president, Héctor Malaver as director of community development, Angelina Cuji as director of women's issues, Camilo Gualinga as director of health, Wilson Malaver as director of education, and other board members according to the traditional system.

Hilda Santi was elected with eighty-five percent of the votes of the delegates, and thus became the first female president in the history of Sarayaku. This broad support for Hilda is accompanied by a mandate from her people to defend their territory against the limitless greed of the transnational capital. Following the strong fighter tradition of the women of Sarayaku, Hilda assumes the leadership of her people with an ample internal legitimacy, which she hopes to strengthen by external alliances with those who share our vision of dignity and proper decisions about the future of the Sarayaku people.

Hilda Santi's work will be organized around four fundamental areas:

1. Continuation and follow-up of the struggle against oil exploitation. Territorial reordering and delimitation.

2. Implementation of infrastructure and productive projects.

3. Improve the quality of bilingual intercultural education through capacity-building with the participation of men and women who hold ancestral knowledge.

4. Strengthen and develop our ancestral knowledge in the field of health, and strive to integrate this with the offical system of health care.
