Comisión del Congreso Nacional visita Sarayacu (10 de mayo 2003)

El jueves 8 de mayo ingresó a Sarayacu la Comisión de Derechos Humanos del Congreso Nacional. El diputado Felipe Tsenkush, indígena Shuar, su secretario, el asesor de la diputada Maria Agusta Rivas y el coronel Rivas se reunieron con la comunidad en la plaza principal para verificar y escuchar los testimonios de lo que ocurrió dentro del territorio de Sarayacu como consecuencia de la presencia de la compañia CGC.

Despues de escuhar los testimonios, el diputado declaró que él estaba para legislar, investigar y sancionar a los culpables y hacer respetar la constitución y las leyes vigentes. Despues de una reunión de mas o menos dos horas, la comisión se retiró. El coronel Rivas devolvió algunas de las escopetas que en el mes de enero habían sido decomisados por el ejército. Pero todavía faltan seis escopetas, lo que causa graves problemas para los afectados, ya que nosotros dependemos de la cacería para nuestra alimentación.

Por otra parte, el diputado del Partico Social Cristiano, Franklin Sanmartín, atacó a Sarayacu por los medios de comunicacion diciendo que somos subersivos de la guerrilla y el narcotráfico. En cambio, un boletín de prensa enviado por la Organización de Pueblos Indígenas de Pastaza (OPIP) menciona que el mencionado diputado fue financiado la campaña por parte de las petroleras CGC y Burlington y que su política ha sido siempre atacar a los pueblos indígenas.

Commission from the National Congress visits Sarayacu (May 10, 2003)

On thursday, May 8, the Comission of Human Rights of the National Congress entered Sarayacu. The deputy and Shuar indian Felipe Tsenkush, his secretary, the adviser of the deputy Maria Augusta Rivas and the colonel Rivas had a meeting with the community at the main plaza in order to verify and hear the testimonies of what happened within the territory of Sarayacu as a consequence of the presence of the company CGC.

After hearing the testimonies, the deputy declared his intention to legislate, investigate and punish the culprits and to make respect the constitución and the valid laws. After a meeting of about two hours, the comission withdrew. Colonel Rivas returned some of the shotguns that in the month of january had been confiscated by the army. But still six shotguns are missing, which constitutes serious problems for the affected people, as we depend on hunting for our food.

For another part, the deputy of the Social Christian Party, Franklin Sanmartín, attacked Sarayacu through the mass media, saying that we are subversives from the guerilla and the drug trade. On the other hand, a press release from the Organization of Indigenous People of Pastaza (OPIP) mentions that the election campaign of this deputy got financed by the petrol companies CGC and Burlington, and that his policy always has been to attack the indigenous peoples.
