Comisión del Congreso del Ecuador visitará Sarayacu (23 de Abril 2003)

En sesión del 10 de abril del 2003, la Comision Especializada de Derechos Humanos del Congreso Nacional del Ecuador, presidida por la Diputada Maria Augusta Rivas, a instancias del Diputado Shuar Felipe Tsenkush, resolvió de manera oficial, realizar una visita a territorios de la OPIP (Organización de Pueblos Indígenas de Pastaza), dentro del cual se incluye los de la comunidad de Sarayacu, a efectos de investigar la denuncia presentada por los dirigentes indigenas contra la petrolera argentina CGC que opera en la zona.

Esta visita tendra como principales objetivos recabar los testimonios de los habitantes de Sarayacu, y realizar una inspeccion del lugar donde la Compania petrolera CGC ha realizado actividades que se denuncian como arbitrarias y violatorias de los derechos humanos.

La visita oficial sera el 25 de abril del 2003, luego de lo cual, la Comision debera emitir un informe sobre la situacion que atraviesan los derechos humanos en esta region del Ecuador.

De igual forma, la OPIP ha solicitado que la Comision ordene la comparecencia de los Ministros de Defensa y de Energia y Minas, con la finalidad de que expliquen sobre sus actuacions en el caso Sarayaku y el estado en que se encuentra el contrato del Bloque 23.

Commision of the Congress of Ecuador will visit Sarayacu (April 23, 2003)

In the session of the 10th of April, the Specialized Commision of Human Rights of the National Congress of Ecuador, presided by deputy Maria Augusta Rivas, on request by the deputy Shuar Felipe Tsenkush, officially resolved to pay a visit to the territories of OPIP (Organization of Indigenous Peoples of Pastaza), including Sarayacu in order to investigate the denouncements presented by the indigenous leaders against the Argentinean oil company CGC which operates in the zone.

The principal purpose of the visit is to gather the testimonies of the inhabitants of Sarayacu and do an inspection of the places where the CGC oil company has performed activities which have been denounced as arbitrary and violating the human rights.

The official visit will be on the 25th of April 2003. The commission should later submit a report regarding the situation of the human rights in this region of Ecuador.

Also, OPIP has requested that the Comission order the presence of the Minister of Defense and of the Minister of Energy and Mines, so that they can explain about its actions in the case of Sarayacu as well as about the current state of the Block 23 contract.
