Equipos de sísmica volverán a ingresar a territorio de Sarayacu dentro de quince días (12 de febrero 2003)

Hoy en la mañana el Sr. Ricardo Nicolás, apoderado de la CGC en el Bloque 23, anunció por medio de la radio que la empresa volverá a entrar a territorio de Sarayacu dentro de quince días para terminar los trabajos sísmicos que han estado paralizados desde que el Gobierno ordenó la demilitarización parcial de la zona en el inicio del presente mes. Según parece, la petrolera todavía confía en que va a poder usar el Ejército Ecuatoriano para aplastar al pueblo de Sarayacu.

Por otro lado, está trabajando una comisión jurídica conformada por la Organización de Pueblos Indígenas de Pastaza (OPIP), la Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas del Ecuador (CONAIE) y el Gobierno Ecuatoriano, con fines de encontrar una solución al conflicto. Por ahora, no se ha logrado una solución definitiva. Las demandas de Sarayacu son las siguientes:

1. Declarar mediante decreto al territorio de Sarayacu como Zona de interés Turístico y patrimonio para el desarrollo de un ecoturismo comunitario Sustentable, según lo establece la ley de Turismo.

2. Negociar la deuda externa a través de la conservación del ecosistema Amazónico en territorio de Sarayacu (programa de servicios ambientales, los estudios que se han realizado en las reservas de Sarayacu lo catalogan a las lagunas sagradas y su vegetación como únicas en el mundo).

3. Rediseñar y modificar una nueva política petrolera en el país, que involucre la participación ciudadana y de las nacionalidades Indígenas.

La CGC con su socio Burlington Resources ya nos han mostrado que no vacilan en emplear violencia para lograr sus fines, y nuestros dirigentes siguen recibiendo amenazas de muerte por medio de llamadas anónimas de teléfono. Rogamos a usted que urgentemente ayude a presionar para evitar que Sarayacu sea víctima de una guerra sangrienta por petroleo en la Amazonía.

Seismic crews to return to Sarayacu territory within two weeks (February 12, 2003)

Today in the morning, Mr. Ricardo Nicolás, representative of CGC in the Block 23, announced in the radio that the company will return to Sarayacu territory within two weeks in order to finalize the seismic works that have been paralyzed since the Government ordered partial demilitarization of the area in the beginning of the present month. Apparently, the petrol company still is confident that it will be able to use the Ecuadorian Army in order to crush the Sarayacu People.

On the other hand, a juridical comission formed by the Organization of Indigenous Peoples of Pastaza (OPIP), the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE), and the Government, is working in order to find a solution to the conflict. For the moment, no definitive solution has been found. The demands of Sarayacu are as follows:

1. Declare through a decree the Sarayacu territory as a Zone of Touristic Interest and patrimony for the development of sustainable community-based eco-tourism, in accordance with the Law of Tourism.

2. Negotiate the external debt through the conservation of the Amazonian ecosystem in the territory of Sarayacu (Program of environmental services. The studies carried out in the reserves of Sarayacu classify the sacred lakes of Sarayacu, and their vegetation, as unique for the world)

3. Redesign and modify a new petrol policy in the country, with the participation of the public and the Indigenous Nationalities.

CGC and its partner Burlington Resources already have shown us that they do not hesitate to use violence in order to reach their objectives, and our leaders continue to receive anonymous death threats over the telephone. We urge you to urgently help to put pressure in order to avoid that Sarayacu becomes victim of a bloody war for petrol in the Amazonia.
